Standing inside the defunct Success rice silo, a miniature radio telescope antenna collects grains of rice that periodically rain down from the silo above.
The shape of the underside of each grain silo is conical with a circular hole at its apex that reveals a deep dark space. The cone is similar to the concave dish of a radio telescope as well as the conical receivers found within each telescope antenna. Both cones function to filter information from above into something manageable below. In the case of the silo, rice is funneled down into a wieldy flow while in the telescope, the cone filters out unwanted frequencies making for a clearer and more decipherable signal. Both the underside of the silo and telescopes are conduits between the space above and ourselves below.
